Meet the Instructor

Katie began her sign language studies at a local community college, which is when she fell in love with the language. She then decided that she would pursue her dream of being a teacher but that dream now involved teaching the deaf. She is currently working on her degree to make that dream a reality. While doing some deaf culture and education research she stumbled upon Laura and Fireese’s video and loved the idea of teaching very young children how to sign, which then lead her to My Smart Hands.

In the last few years Katie has started to spread her knowledge of sign language that she gathered from her studies, deaf community activities, teaching a sign language club to grades 1 through 5 at a local school, and working directly with a family that had a deaf child. She can’t wait to start up her My Smart Hands classes and continue to spread her knowledge and love of the language to other families of hearing and deaf children.

Katie has been married to her husband, David, for 7 years (in July) now and they have a three beautiful children.  Jaxon is 4 1/2 and Mason is 2 1/2 and Cambree who was brought into the world on March 20th.
